Installing Windows is fast. Its the reinstalling of all your programs and reconfiguration of all of them that takes time

Simple formula: If system feels sluggish = reinstall.
If not = don't fix what isn't broken

I remember defragmenting my HD on a regular and reinstalling Windows twice a year. Good times.

Run "sfc /scannow" from elevated cmd prompt. Cleanup main drive with windows cleanup in explorer. Then run Rkill, Superantispyware, CCleaner. Then do a DISM windows clean, should be enough to get it close to reinstall standard. To clean WinSxS folder run following from elevated cmd prompt :
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

For those with mechanical hard drives run Defraggler to defrag. Just for those who weren't sure. ;-)

A clean install always runs faster then one filled with crud. The crud id like the 'boiling frog', you don't notice the creep until you do a fresh install and you feel like you have a newer computer.

During this discussion I got flashbacks to the experience of reinstalling Windows 95, took 3-4 hours and after that I had to download some updates and programs. Dial-up modem, need I say more?

Windows 98 reinstalling was like put the CD in and go out with your friends for a beer, get back, still not done. Start Windows 98, go make a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate not started yet. After a while....this takes even longer.... needs a reinstall. "Hey guys wanna get a beer with me, I'm reinstalling Windows" - "Didn't you do that few months ago?"

Flashbacks to installing XP service pack after service pack. Makes you really appreciate Windows today(which...actually if this was Cinema Sins I'd expect a Ding just for that).

I love seeing the thousands of different expressions on her face when she has got nothing to add.

I remember these days of installing Windows. These days are long gone for me, since I moved to Linux, more than a decade ago. I don't even know how Windows installs nor looks these days, I guess it is similar.

my first computer was a sinclair 70..I am much older then windows. I am old enough I can remember being excided about my first 20 MG hard drive and actually saying "I wont ever have to worry about storage ever again".

I havent reinstalled Windows for 3 years, only changing PC parts and my 970 EVO M.2 is traveling from system to system and ALL IS PERFECT FINE! Disabled telemetry, distrubuted link tracking amd other shiit, all updates enabled, regulary doing Disk Cleanup and Trimming, no lags, no frags ;), all rocking like new Win10Home!

I recently picked my old PC out of the closet … put in a 16 gig ram set (it used to have one 8g stick) and re installed windows …. Holy moly. I can’t believe I had this computer collecting dust. Now it runs just as good as my new PC. And I actually prefer gaming on the old one now so my new one stays nice longer

Multicore processors, fast SSDs and plenty of Ram should make the size and bloat of the registry less of a problem than it was in the old days. The last computer I had with a HDD as the boot drive was 5 years ago and that was very slow by the time I replaced it with a new system. I have not noticed any system slowdown on my PCs that boot from NVME drives in the years that I have been using them.
