Yes. All true. Finally, the life-giving sun is honored instead of demonized.

As a very fit 70 year old....with plenty of sun damage to my skin (actually, much reduced using red light and retinol therapy...and some judicious nitrogen freezing by my dermatologist)....I will say that this notion of, 'the sun is good for you' is, well, highly problematic. Notice here that both the presenters have dark skin. For those with light skin, sun exposure can be both aging and deadly. I grew up in a time when there were few warnings about the dangers of sun exposure....and I have seen both personally and in those around me how really dangerous it is. Much of the time the effects don't even show up until you're over 60 ...and then watch out; watch as the age marks and keratoses simply show up overnight...even wilthout sun exposure. I take tons of Vit D (and K2)....by mouth.

Just had some blood tests done. My vitamin D levels were 97 ng/mL. My serum calcium was exactly mid range at 2.4 mmol/L (range is 2.2-2.6 mmol/L) Take 5000 IU D3 combined with 100 mcg K2 each day.

At 70 years of age, I have been a Sun Worshipper my entire life and never use sunscreen. I used "tanning lotion" briefly as teenager when it was all the craze, then tried mineral oil before settling on plain old water from spray bottle. I will however apply a lotion AFTER worship. People will ask me "where" I get my tan and when I answer "outside" and they act surprised. Don't know if they thought I traveled to an exotic island or if they thought I used tanning bed.

I've always thought it was quite a coincidence that the explosion of skin cancer cases coincides with the introduction of sunscreen to the population?! Maybe there is a link to putting all these chemicals on your skin, and then baking it in really well in the sun, and skin cancer. I'm 54 and have never used sunscreens, and yes I do spend a lot of time in the sun, and have never had an issue. I know a few people who have skin cancer and they are all big sunscreen users.

This is something I'll never get convinced what side is right. Lots of long lived people that I saw, who also have great skin are blatant about the use of a good sunscreen.

People who don't care and spent their lives on the sun look way older the majority of the time.

The right answer is probably on the middle. Take a little sunbath here and there for vitamin D, and protect yourself on the majority of the rest of the time.

You're very clever for positioning the chairs the way you do because it improves sharing of ideas as opposed to battling ideas which can be more the case when the dynamic of positioning during discourse is opposite

My hide used to burn every time I was in the sun to long, usually about 20-30, I have not had a sunburn in over twenty years, out in the sun everyday now, The difference now, I drink a small can of tomato juice everyday, the cooked tomatoes/high lycopene content, help your skin not to burn

Spot on! Doc, as a apnea sufferer, I can relate. Scientists studied skeletons of humans 1000 + years ago found all skulls had large well formed palates and straight teeth, yes those guys did get ample cut D, k, etc, but one factor left out is they spent an average of two hours a day chewing real food, none of that baby pablum Cargill group is peddling!

I've never been a fan of sunscreen or the ingredients in a vast majority of them.

My Caucasian friends have dismissed this thought as the luxury of a deeply melanated person, and I've never fully bought that.

I'm not fully convinced that they need it either, and many people are leaving comments saying they stopped burning in the sun and needing sunscreen when they fixed their diet.

Time, and perhaps more research from unbiased sources will tell.

Great info here for parents as well.

I've always been lazy about applying sunscreen, and would regularly get sunburns while on a SAD diet. In the 10 years since I switched to a low-inflammation diet, though, I've only gotten burned once, and it was after a whole day in full sun. I've actively avoided sunscreen since noticing that connection.

I always needed sunscreen or I would burn. But when I went low carb, real fat I stopped needing it. You need Cholesterol to make vitamin D.
