KOH-I-NOOR TRITONE COLORED PENCIL SWATCHES and Commentary!

Hey friends! This is just a swatch video of each pencil in the Koh-I-Noor Tritone colored pencil set (I'll be reviewing these in a separate video which I'll include down below once it's posted). There are 24 colors total. I had to time lapse the swatching, otherwise we'd be here for hours! It's an exciting colored pencil in that each pencil has 3 tones to each pencil, hence the name. Some pencils create more variations in tones, while others serve a purpose to give monochromatic tones.

I love these. I have had the Magic pencils for years, the big chunky triangle versions and liked them but they hurt my hands after a while. So I got these for Christmas (mine don't have names on sadly) and I really enjoy using them. They work a bit better with a less sharp point I think, so more colour variation is available by a pencil turn. The greens and browns work so well for foliage and the reds and oranges are great for flowers. I think my favourite is the mauve/blue/red combo.

Hi Jane. I own these pencils. The trick to using them is to keep rotating the pencil as you color, so you use all the 3 colors that are in each pencil. I really enjoy your channel, and look forward to the next video. By the way, I love all your beautiful colorful eye shadows that you wear. You look beautiful in any color eye shadow, lucky you!!!

Many of these colors are great if you have a light sketching style. You could see a great example on the official product page.

If one starts coloring in heavily - doing several rounds of cross-hatching - the tri-tone effect diminishes. Especially those with darker colors. It just looks muddy. There's only a handful of landscape subjects I can imagine those excelling in, like volcanoes slowly smoldering at night.

Some colors don't even seem worth getting since there's so little contrast.

The orange-brown swatch reminded me of a Tortoiseshell color, I like it. I think the inconsistency of not knowing the lay down each time, would drive me bat-crap-crazy though, lol!

Really interesting pencils. I remember having something like this years ago. I wonder if you would see more variation if they were swatched out in a larger area like a watercolor that granulates.
Tfs.

I like this brand. Koh-i-noor make some excellent technical pens. Some of the best rapidographs and isographs I've ever used for the lowest prices. Talk about a fine liner.

I have these. I like them for adding details on top of my watercolor pieces.

Could you do swatches where you just draw long lines with those? I think many people actually use them for line art and I haven't really seen anyone doing that type of swatch video.

The ember pencil would frustrate me. While I saw all three colors go down. The black kept dominating.

Since you asked... I have these pencils. I was disappointed in most of them, because although the color combinations look cool when you're staring at the pencil core, when you apply them to paper and blend, you generally end up with a single color. Particularly with the pencils that have three yellows or three blues or three greens, and some of the red-oranges, once you've blended out your coloring, you can't really tell there's more than one color in there. So why are we bothering again...?

Sure, you can keep track of what color is where on your tip, and rotate it to get the colors you want. But to be honest, if I have to do that -- stop, look, turn, stop look, turn, stop look, turn... -- I'd rather just use multiple pencils of my own choosing, and have complete control over what goes where.

A problem I had, which you seemed to experience at least once but didn't mention, was the breakage. :( I don't care for the stubby little factory points that come on pencils, so I started out sharpening as I went, but I quickly stopped. These pencils break like crazy during sharpening. I had one pencil break three times before I could get a good point on it, and one broke *five* times in a single sharpen. o_O All I can say is I'm glad these are cheap, but still, when you get that much breakage, you become aware of the money you're shredding into the garbage.

These are novelty pencils. They're fun for what they are, but as far as being actually useful, bringing something to your artwork that regular colored pencils don't have? No, not really. Add in the breakage problem, and it's a thumbs-down from me.

I can't choose the quality of your video either - what resolution did you upload in, just out of interest? 🤔

I got a Koh-i-noor jumbo red/blue/white pencil in an art subscription box and I'm a bit 'meh' about it. I can see how your set could have really useful applications, though - especially the greens. 😊

I remember those 70's orangey brown carpets too! 😁

It's been 8 months since this video, and I miss your art videos.
It's sad that you mostly only do make up videos only these days.
