The Shoe Fire - Seeing the Bigger Picture

Показать описание
The Shoe Fire is burning in a very remote part of Shasta County, in Northern California. The fire has burned about 2 square miles, in the area between the Pit and McCloud Rivers, north of Shasta Lake.
This fire provides a good launching point for talk about landscape-scale fire management, and some of the major obstacles we face in using fire to restore and maintain the resiliency of California's wildlands.

Hi Zeke, I love what you do! I live in Palo Cedro and have spent a lot of time on Lake Shasta, especially in the Pit river arm, but all over it, over the last 25 plus years. I can testify to the fact that deer and bears routinely swim across the various arms of the lake. They do what they need to do. we have seen it in fall and winter, when the lake gets more quiet.

You must be the only person on the internet who presents both sides of a voting proposition with nuance while having an invested interest in what one side would do to your wallet. Wish every topic was covered like this. Props for that.

Thank you for the prop 4 discussion. I agree 100%. GO BIG! Let’s talk strategies on comprehensive land management. Thanks for helping me make my decision on this prop.

Thanks so much for discussing Prop 4, appreciate your points. I read that the CA Chapparal Association is against it. I certainly want my tax money to be used thoughtfully.

Zeke - one of the criteria for 30 x 30 inclusion is durable stewardship. Land can be included if there is a conservation easement or fee title AND management resources. I totally agree that we are way way behind on stewardship - the threat of development is often minimal but the “leave it alone” philosophy can be a disaster in the long run. One aspect I find frustrating is that ranch easements are difficult to include in the absence of overly detailed management plans, yet a multigenerational ranching family provides built-in stewardship with deep knowledge of the land. Thanks for your insights and (appropriately) iconoclastic view of fire.

Bagley Fire was the closest fire to our house out there burning down. Lots of fun.

Last month, I was driving through the Tehachapi's mountains. I saw 8-10 white trucks. The trucks were spread out over an 8 mile road. The trucks had a companie label on the door. With yellow writing starting with an (H). about 15 minutes after I drove through the road. I saw a large plume of smoke coming that area. The very next day. I drove back through that road. The burnt mountain was in the very area where those were trucks parked.

I seen deer swimming across small parts of McCloud Lake and also Lake Oroville when I've been kayaking.
The Forest Service should start trading land with Sierra Pacific and phase out the checkerboard land program, and get back to properly managing the forest. Indigenous People are much better at that than the Forest Service, maybe they should be managing the forest!

The fire smoked Redding out yesterday. Inside recess for all Shasta county kids.

I can't imagine deer swimming across that big of a body of water. I would assume they figured out how to navigate the long way around. I sure don't have any intel to back this.

Could you please enable captions for those of us hard of hearing or trying to watch in a crowded lunch room? Haha. Thanks!
