Once again, Volvo proves they engineer their cars for real world threats not just to pass crash tests. That's why an 8 year old car is outperforming much newer vehicles in this new test

I want to see how other mid-size 3 row SUV's do because undoubtedly the larger side structure makes it more difficult for good side protection. Some areas were acceptable for the XC90. This 2015 design did well nonetheless.

This is not to suggest Volvo doesn't build incredibly safe cars but they absolutely made updates specifically to pass this test. The vehicle used for the passenger small overlap was a 2018 but the IIHS applies that rating to older 2016/17 models. This new side rating only applies to 2023 and newer which means older models are not included due to differences in the crash structure.

Quite impressive that the XC90 still got a good despite its age.

But damnnnn, this is surely a very brutal test, if even an XC90 weighing >2 tons, got thrown so far away from the first point of impact.

The Volvo Xc90 had more side intrusion than the 2020 Ford Explorer on this same test. That means that the side structure is stronger on the Explorer
