What would an open Democratic Party convention mean? | DW News

Joe Biden has pulled out of the US presidential race, bowing to weeks of pressure over his age and health. The 81-year-old said he was ending his re-election bid in the best interest of his party and the country. He announced his decision in a letter released on Sunday where said he plans to focus on his duties as president for the remainder of his term. Biden has now endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic party's new nominee to run against Donald Trump in November's election.
Biden's exit comes less than a month before the Democratic convention in Chicago. Kamala Harris is moving to lock in delegates to confirm her nomination. But some in the party are calling for the process to be thrown open for other contenders.

Should be an open convention. Can’t just crown someone. She might end up the candidate anyway since people seem to be hyped for her but at least she should earn it.

Rory Stewart made the point yesterday that the Democrats should have an open convention to allow for all possible candidates to put their cases and be evaluated. If Kamala won, this would give her a more genuine legitimacy than being appointed unopposed can do.

Isn't it better to work through the differences instead of swapping them under the rag? It means absolutely nothing in this case. Harris is the nominee whether we think it was rushed or not.
Rushing has made a lot of Democrats concerned. For sure the party will rally around her and behave like she’s the best thing since sliced bread. But the truth is, we don’t know. We’re about to find out.
