When my mother was a baby, her parents were told by medical professionals that she had "hammered toes" and would always have foot problems. Her parents just accepted this diagnosis, and no effort was ever made to correct whatever issues she may have had with her feet back then. My mother grew up accepting this diagnosis also. She has always refused to go barefoot and wears shoes even in the house. As an adult she has had multiple surgeries on her toes: bunionectomies on both feet, multiple joint removals, she wears orthotics, and she still has issues.

When I was a child, my mother tried to tell me that I too have "hammered toes". I refused to believe her. I have always gone barefoot as much as I could. (I had to fight for permission to do this as a child. My mother did not like my going barefoot. But I fought for--and often won--permission to do so.) I wear shoes for running. (There is too much potential to cut the soles of my feet on debris on the surfaces that I run on without them. Plus: I often run on snow, ice, and slush!) But I always do home workouts barefoot. (Because of my long history practising yoga, this just seems normal to me.) Even when I had an office job, I took my shoes off in the office unless I was with a client. To this day, my feet are in great shape!

When I started working out with my mother (to keep her active during the pandemic, when all of her regular fitness classes at the seniors' centre had to be cancelled), knowing that she had issues with her feet, I made her do DAREBEE's Ankle Recovery or Sore Feet workout every day. I don't know how much those workouts helped her. (She mostly bitched and whined about my making her do them, and flopped her ankles around without putting much effort into the work.) But I did the exercises with her every day too, and I worked them as hard as I could. I strongly suspect that my training with those workouts has saved me from being stuck on isolated hiking trails with a sprained ankle on more than one occasion. Because my feet and ankles are strong, even when I slip and turn my ankle on slippery, rocky terrain, I am able to recover without injury and keep going. Strong feet are important!

Very interesting topic, feet fitness is very underestimated. Strong feet are linked with better balance, strength (as all our kinetic energy for movement stems from the ground) and better aging as it reduces or even nullify the risks of falling as an elder. Looking forward for more content on the topic!

Great tip! What about using toe socks?

Thank you for this information! Healthy feet are essential for a healthy body, however this is an underestimated topic in the modern world where our feet are supposed to be in stiff, fancy shoes. I've been working out barefoot for quite some time, and it is so relaxing and rewarding. I feel that my feet are stronger and more balanced. Also the mild bunion and associated pain caused by years of wearing narrow shoes seem to get better 😀
