Watch Daniil Trifonov perform Chopin Prelude No. 8 in F sharp minor from his album "The Carnegie Recital", released on Deutsche Grammophon.
Trifonov's Carnegie Hall recital debut is bound to be a landmark event. In the past thirty years, Deutsche Grammophon has bestowed the honour of a live Carnegie Hall recording on only two other pianists: Mikhail Pletnev and Lang Lang. Recorded in February this year, this richly contrasted and spectacularly virtuosic programme includes much-loved classics by Chopin and Liszt. Trifonov was described by The Washington Post as "an heir to Liszt"- the dynamic young Russian has been hailed around the world for his breathtaking virtuosity and the intense, inspired originality of his musical interpretations.

It's just brilliant! I'm speechless I don't even know what to say about him. He's a genius, his technique is impeccable and brilliant! His playing is so powerful, emotional that even people who don't know much about classical music see that he's a genius! Love him <3

Virtuosity like this deserves a place among the greatest of deutschegrammophon

"Bad performance" and "sloppily voiced" this is NOT! Instead, this is "subtly voiced" by any REASONABLE standards (in contrast 2the unjustified standards endorsed below by some others). This is maturity: pining & restraining equally in the expected uniquely fulfilling Trifonov way. This is what captured me as a Trif devotee a couple yrs ago, and i'm not ashamed to applaud him here either.
And what is so undesirable about the camera technique here? Beautiful & compelling -just like Daniil.

I'm gonna have to agree with the Lass here. In this video we finally see true artistry. Trif, as suppressed the visual and obvious modes of his sound production, in order to return to a natural state of effortless music making that does not require the artifice of exaggerated motion. He's the Wagner of the Piano!

It's nice to see Jake so grown up and with a job after Two and a Half Men.

Breathtaking virtuosity indeed... though the interpretation is clearly not to everyone's taste. The clip deserves a prize for worst camera work.

No, that's definitely not the way to perform this marvellous prelude. Everything is rushed, monotone and the melody of the octaves doesn't even emerge from that mayhem. This is simply technical showing off. The greatest rendition ever made of this one is Ivo Pogorelich's.

but did he hear the SPEED? I mean like shit...that was some virtuosic playing. They got to advertise what SELLS, and that is trif's good ole "russian virtuosity". And boy does he have it in droves... and yes, a good virtuoso must look dashing in the making, like liszt, no spasms or scary witch faces. a good virtuoso has to SEDUCE..

...and-so-sorry-for-the-neurotic-dashes...Really-it's-that-my-spacebar-doesn't-work...Also, -how-you-folks-know-me-as-the-"Lass?"--which-in-fact-was-my-former-name, -when-i-believe-"The-Amish-Pianist"-is-displayed-here....Hmmm, -thanks-but-a-mystery.

And you are, as always, the arbiter of who is or is not a "real musician"? ;-]

Too fast. Most of the subtlety in the first half of the piece lost. Just because he "can" play it that fast doesn't mean you should. Not buying this CD.

I like Trifonov, but he is too quirky to be “definitive”.

As fast as it should be. Chopin wanted fire, trifonov delivered. This music is not for sleeping
