God thank you so much. I’m 33 (34 in a few days) and I am horrified just thinking about a pelvic exam or speculum exam. I have a really bad anxiety disorder (as well as a number of other mental health illnesses) and when I even think about seeing a gynecologist my heart pounds and I start to feel very nauseous. This video has honestly helped quite a bit. I’m going to try and make an appointment in the upcoming weeks. Wish me luck!!

I had my first visit and Pap smear about 2 days ago and it went really well. My doctor walked me through everything and I do mean everything. No pain what so ever and I felt comfortable enough to share what I needed to share with her. Don’t be scared girls, you have to do it eventually. Unless your doctors hurt you it’s nothing to it I promise!! 😊

Even as a man, it’s helpful to have watched this video. My doc recently made me undergo a ‘routine physical’ in order to get my prescription refilled for an antidepressant. I didn’t really expect this to include a pelvic exam.

In fact, I didn’t even think I was going to have to take my trousers off and put on a paper gown. Just putting on a gown is distressing enough because you feel suddenly vulnerable and it’s not like I had communicated any complaints to my GP.

At any rate, I left my underwear on because in my mind, I was just there to make sure the antidepressants weren’t having any serious sides effects. That is, I assumed the doctor had to take precautions against blindly renewing prescriptions in order to adhere to medical standards, etc.

So after looking in my ears, nose and throat and checking my lungs and heart, she then noticed I was still wearing my underwear and asked me to remove it. I really wasn’t expecting this or even what followed … which ended up being a full pelvic exam (male). I was like, “Why am I _doing_ this?” But the reason was as I’ve stated before which was to avoid Discontinuation Syndrome should this GP no longer renew my prescription. Reluctantly, I did as she asked.

It wasn’t until WEEKS later by watching videos (mostly for both sexes), that a patient has the right to refuse ANY portion of an exam they’re not comfortable with. In fact, I would have already have forgotten about it by now, except the doctor’s office is now calling me back to go over the results.

So whereas I didn’t prepare myself AT ALL for the ‘routine exam’ now I have finally put about 100 hours of research to prepare for the follow up visit. And as a result, I have discovered that the pelvic exam was _wholly_ unnecessary.

So whoever you are, male or female, don’t make the same mistake I did and let any doctor coerce you into doing something you’re uncomfortable with. Just b/c 99 out of 100 other patients don’t have a problem with this or that, you’re allowed to be that 1 out 100 who’s uncomfortable with it.

If the doctor needs to explore this or that, let them make the case for it. You don’t have to just hand over your power to them if you’re uncomfortable with it.

In high school, my friend told me they pull your ovaries out and feel around for cysts. It terrified me, I later learned that that was definitely not true. LOL.

Can I ask, what do you do as a doctor for a patient who can’t get over their fear of an exam? I heard everyone say “just get over it and it’s not as bad as you think”. So I went in nervous and shaking and found not only was it as bad as I thought, but it was so much worse. I relived the whole experience over and over for years and did not go back to any doctor for the past 27 years. I know that’s not logical, but your logical mind leaves you when you have such a fear. Last year I almost died from hemorrhaging and after my transfusion the hospital made an appointment for me which was to include an endometrial biopsy. I was shocked to read how painful that could be...in addition to my fear....and I asked if they had any way to help me, like sedation that any dentist would do for people with a fear. I was told no, and they just told me I could cancel my appointment. 4 other practices offered no help either. So it’s almost a year now and I never went and am still experiencing problems. What do you do for people with irrational fears who can’t get past them to the point where they can’t even get a problem taken care of. I feel hopeless at this point and find it hard to believe they’d rather not treat someone than offer extra help. You just seem so nice and was wondering what you thought.

Just made my appointment today. Thank you for helping calm my nerves. My regular doctor told me to wait till I was 24 to go but I decided to make my appointment at 21 and get the pap out of the way.

Thanks for your video, Dr. Lincoln. I don’t have a daughter, but if I did, I’d want her to have a doctor like you who only goes at the patient’s pace. Trust is such a vital thing to build.

I had my first pap at 18 because I wanted birth control..I was told this was necessary to get it in tn. It was traumatizing and your saying that its not necessary before 21? To be clear I wanted to refill a script from another state and I was completely alone because I had to leave my home state due to legal reasons.
