Problem Solving:
a) A tank 60 cm high is filled with water, A hole is made at the side 20 cm from the top. What is the velocity of the stream issuing from the hole? How far from the base will it fall?
b) Gasoline flows in a pipeline 8 inches in diameter at a speed of 2.8 miles/hr. How many gallons are delivered in one hour?
c) A Venturi meter has a diameter of 2 inches at the constriction. It is connected to a 6-inch pipe. The pres¬sures are observed to be 25 lbs/in2 at the pipe and 18 lbs/in2 at the constriction. What is the velocity of the water at the pipe? How many cubic feet of water will flow in th® pipe per hour?
d) A cylindrical tank 1 ft in radius has a hole 2 inches in radius at the bottom. Find the velocity of efflux when the height of the water is 1.5 ft in the tank.
e) A rectangular tank has a cross-section of 20 X 40 cm and is filled with water to a height of 50 cm. If a hole 2 cm2 is made at the bottom, find the time required to empty the tank.
f) An orifice is 10 ft below the surface of the water contained in a cylindrical tank on top of which is a piston exerting a pressure of 5 lbs/in2 above atmospheric pressure. Find the velocity of the fluid flowing through the orifice.
g) Water discharges from a water main into the atmosphere at the rate of 15 gallons per minute. If the gage pressure in the main is 100 lbs/in2, find the diameter of the orifice.
h) Find the horsepower developed by a pump in lifting 200 gallons of water per minute against a head of 15 ft.
i) A water jet that drives a Pelton wheel has a diameter of 2.5 inches. The velocity of the water is 130 ft per second. If efficiency of the water wheel is 80%, what horsepower is delivered?
