Nice sales pitch. Mayer spent years learning the greats songs and solos playing note for note by ear. like all of the previous generation of great players.

It is key for developing vocabulary, phrasing, note articulation, dynamics etc

What you are talking about (learning harmony, triad positions up the neck) is also fundamental but is not either/or. You need to develop both.
