Carlos Zarate had an insane knockout rate for any fighter, but he was champion at bantamweight! How did he do this? Today we look at posture, a neglected but all important element of boxing technique. Zarate used the alignment of his upper body in a unique way to always ensure that he had a punch lined up, in a prime position to hit with maximum power.

Fun fact, Zarate is my wife's maiden name. I tread very carefully in my house.

His 4 loses were all to Hall of Fame boxers, just showing the level he was at even when he retired.

Yes he was scary. As was Julian Jackson and Bob Foster. They all had life threatening power.

The lower the weight class the bigger difference there is between durability and power making KO artists at lower weight classes seem more impressive than those at higher weights classes. Carlos fighting at 118 and putting everyone in stretchers makes him really special

This guy is literally Sonny Liston pocket edition.

7:50 was probably the most beautiful thing I've seen in boxing. The guy hit an opponent and immediately jumped to help the guy from suffering further damage by falling off the ring

He had a higher successful KO rate than the all-time greats 🤯

I really like your book, “Aggressive Defense”. I’m a kickboxer and it helped me build a long guard that really works well for me.

Great analysis. Zarate and Zamora helped put the bantamweight division on TV back then, especially after Zarate easily demolished Zamora.

Even I didn't expect that after Zamora KO'd Eusebio Pedroza.

But unlike Zamora, whose career stalled, Pedroza shrugged off that loss, moved up to featherweight and had a long, dominant string of title defenses.

Great era for boxing, and much of it was on TV if you were in range of Mexican broadcasters.

I had the pleasure of seeing him fight live once, in Sydney against Jeff Fenech. It had a disappointing ending, being stopped on a cut to Jeff from an accidental headbutt, but it was still great to see two legends from different eras fight each other. I believe Carlos was 39 at the time, and making a comeback.

Thanks for shining a light on Zarate. He was one of my favorite fighters back in the '70s. His fight with Zamora (the Z Boys!) was a huge deal, like Crawford-Spence or Beterbiev-Bivol nowadays.

My god, I was thinking so much about zarate and out of nowhere there was a video of him here, but anyway, great video of one of my favorite Boxers and now how about a video of Brazilian legend Éder Jofre?

His rising lead punch looks almost like a Jolt as described by Jack Dempsey doesn't it? Great Run down of his skills.

My comparison for him is like a taller version of Ricardo Lopez, since both are fundamentally sound and punch selection is kind of similar. I notice that a lot of Mexican boxer punchers are really good with their lefts especially how they set up the lead uppercut and left hook in combinations. It’s risky but the payoff is great

His gloves were magnets for pressure points - what i especially love about Zarate is some rounds EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN punch had bad intentions, weighted, stiff, precise in an Arguello sort of fashion/technique.
