How the GE Research Lab started at the end of the 19th century. AC pioneer Charles P. Steinmetz was working on improving the lightbulb and fears that Siemens will overtake GE, he has the vision of an independent lab which can focus on creative solutions to develop a metallic filament light bulb. E.W. Rice Jr. agrees and they create a lab similar to the Bayer's pharmaceutical labs. They go to MIT and hire Willis Whitney and assemble a team of the the best. Today the GE Global Research Center has thousands of employees.
