I was a permanent resident when I took my LLM and I just became a U.S. citizen. This is the only conversation I heard that speaks very closely and truthfully to what I experienced and have learned. Thanks for this video and thanks very much to your guest.

I’m a teaching assistant for a LLM (foreign student LLM) legal writing class. All of these students are licensed in other countries. They will earn their LLM degrees after one year of legal study in USA and then sit for the bar. But many of the students are not prepared and have a far lower pass rate on the bar compared to JD students. I think it’s a failure of the LLM “system.” Many of them never take Contracts, Property, Evidence, among others. I’m not sure a solution to this issue. They take a longer bar-prep course, but that doesn’t seem to bear much fruit. I think a better program should be available. Thoughts?

NY certainly used to allow foreign practitioners to take the bar exam without a US degree (not sure if they still do). A lot of my friends ended up in NY City that way. Agree with your guest re transferring from US to (say) Australia. Some serious bridging courses are necessary (which almost add to to doing a completely new law degree).

Great video Angela!

Thank you so much for this video. It was very helpful and informative!
I was planning on qualifying as a lawyer in France and working there for 1-2 years before applying for an LLM in the US in order to sit for the NY bar exam.
I hope that networking, making connections, and attending job fairs will be enough to be able to find a job... It'll definitely be a challenge!!

Great interview...
1. What's the recommended list of top 10 LLM in California and New York?
2. Do you guys recommend an online LLM program and then apply for work visa to practice your knowledge after those 2 or 1 year study?

New York admits foreign trained lawyers. You have to get foreign credentials evaluated first which takes a couple months.

Personally this is heartbreaking as i was seriously considering to apply for 2 years JD from Chicago. But it makes sense. Why would an employer consider a student with Visa hurdles and comparatively not so good english. This is quite informative and to the point. Thanks very much. I was wondering if i can do JD from US on job visa in future if i end up there doing job in other field.

Regardless of nationality, JD students don't have to concern about finding jobs as much as LLM students, do they?

I am a JD student, but I have many friends who graduated from law schools in China and came to the US for LLM, it takes them 3-6 attempts to pass the BAR.

I was thinking about doing the 02 year old JD. Now, I don't know what to decide! Is this accelerated program bad?
