He started off with the presumption that Jo was judging him. Every time she tried to teach something, he didn't take it as teaching, he took it as judging.
Mike thought that Jo was going to come in and just magically fix the kids or show his wife how to deal with them. He had no idea that he should learn how to parent his kids also, and that's what he was resisting.
