Just got my first baitcasting combo and set it up thanks to this video! Been a casual spin fisher my whole life, never willing to try baitcasting because it was "for advanced anglers" due to the dreaded backlash! Jordan showed me how baitcasting is not intimidating after all, and I gained the confidence to go out and try it. It is so much fun! Thank you so much for all your content--you are all greatly appreciated. Much love addicts <3 <3

Although this is years old, it is awesome. I’m recovering from surgery and have nothing to do but get back into fishing. At 59:years old, it’s been over 30 years since I was into the sport. Thanks guys for the best fishing channel on YouTube

Eeek. This is the first addicted tutorial which I think is going to lead people into problems and frustration.

1) On some reels, there is a knob on the spool to directly tie the line. For those reels, braid all the way to the spool is fine. On a reel like the Okuma in the video, I think the majority of viewers would benefit from having mono backing to ensure there the line has good traction with the spool and it won't slip. I know that I've done straight braid only to find my line not retrieving when I reel as the spool just cannot grip the slick braid as well as it can mono. The spool just spins at the core of the braid.

2) I always ensure that there is a LOT of line tension when I spool fresh line on a baitcaster - especially when it's braid. Jordan's approach of thumbing the first few casts while using a 3/4 or 1 oz jig 1)prevents initial bird's nests (thumbing), and 2) ensures a lot of line tension while retrieving heavy jigs through water. However, you can skip the need for thumbing or using a heavy jig if you just put proper line tension while spooling the reel in the first place.

If the line is too loose on the spool, you'll get more bird's nests and you run the risk of really digging the braid into the spool.

Braid is expensive. Having to cut it off your reel or worse, becoming discouraged in using a baitcaster because the line isn't properly spooled, is a real concern.

I think first-time baitcaster users would generally benefit by 1) using mono backing, and 2) making sure that there is a lot of line tension when spooling braid.

Thanks guys! Just snagged a Citrix 354 off Okuma's site on clearance and a guide select for steelies here this winter. Stoked to use it after using spinning for decades!
