Ageism: Am I Old Enough?

Is it only me who experienced than….?

When I started my career as 19 years old, I haven’t thought about ageism much. I had different non-managerial roles in my life and it was ok: officer, specialist, coordinator, assistant. The fun part came when I was promoted to assistant manager role at the age of 24. Some people were neutral or genuinely happy with my movement, some are not.

What did I do?

- spend most of my time on professional development that I thought I was lacking*which wasn’t the case
- I tried to dress older, more ‘ladylike’
- I started taken my own opinion more seriously and started sharing it with other people
- I became a good listener. First, when you listen to, especially to “adults“ you do learn a lot. Second, managers with 15 years of experience like to be listened to.

Warning: you can and you should listen to and learn from other people; however, never blindly follow their advice. What worked for them might not work for you. Your intuition and common sense are your guiding stars.

If you are a young professional who wants to learn how to start or continue a fulfilling career in the Learning & Development without spending months or breaking a bank, The L&D Blueprint might be for you. This is live 6 weeks group program (8 participants only) that starts on the May 13.
