People saying that truck driver is at fault, stopping distance for a truck is much greater than a normal car. That smaller truck is parked around the bend being a blind spot. Truck driver did the best he could.

If it were Manual, it would be slower to reverse, but the change would be faster, while the automatic is slow to change gear from 1 to Reverse, but it is faster to pick up speed.
