Interestingly, the answer was found in the German city of Nuremberg. There, one of the most significant legal proceedings in history took place when 24 of the most powerful N4zi leaders were tried for the crimes committed by the Third Reich. The end of the conflict did not mean the end of the deaths, as twelve of these German leaders were sentenced to die by hanging.

My father fought and was captured and spent the rest of the war in a Stalag. Came home 6 months after the war ended. He was hospitalized from being malnourished . He didn’t get the welcoming and the people involved never gave any thanks. But always felt proud for his service.

A little known fact is that many of the guards at Nuremburg during the trials were former Waffen SS men from the Baltic Republic who as displaced persons were allowed to enlist in units of the American army formed of former soldiers from the Baltic Republics which earn a great deal of respect from their American superiors and later guarded a critical section of the border between the Russian and American sectors of Germany.
