Lounge is the unofficial ranking system for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe! When you wish to compete, you will play against other players of similar match-making rating (MMR). Depending on your MMR, you will place in one of the numerous ranks in Lounge:
Iron 1: 0-999 MMR
Iron 2: 1000-1999 MMR (Placement: 1500)
Bronze 1: 2000-2999 MMR (Placement: 2500)
Bronze 2: 3000-3999 MMR (Placement: 3500)
Silver 1: 4000-4999 MMR (Placement: 4500)
Silver 2: 5000-5999 MMR
Gold 1: 6000-6999 MMR
Gold 2: 7000-7999 MMR
Platinum 1: 8000-8999 MMR
Platinum 2: 9000-9999 MMR
Sapphire 1: 10000-10999 MMR
Sapphire 2: 11000-11999 MMR
Ruby 1: 12000-12999 MMR
Ruby 2: 13000-13999 MMR
Diamond 1: 14000-14999 MMR
Diamond 2: 15000-15999 MMR
Master: 16000-16999 MMR
Grandmaster: 17000+ MMR

Depending on your rank, you will only be eligible to compete in some of the following tiers:
Tier G: Iron 1 + Iron 2 + Placement
Tier FG: Iron 2 + Bronze 1
Tier F: Bronze 1 + Bronze 2
Tier EF: Bronze 2 + Silver 1
Tier E: Silver 1 + Silver 2
Tier DE: Silver 2 + Gold 1
Tier D: Gold 1 + Gold 2
Tier CD: Gold 2 + Platinum 1
Tier C: Platinum 1 + Platinum 2
Tier BC: Platinum 2 + Sapphire 1
Tier B: Sapphire 1 + Sapphire 2
Tier AB: Sapphire 2 + Ruby 1
Tier A: Ruby 1+
Tier S: Ruby 2+
Tier X: Diamond 1+

If you're just getting started, you will be placed in either Iron or Bronze. You'll typically see the seasoned veterans in Sapphire or above.

This is exactly the reason why Items should only be dictated by the player positions, not by the distance between players. In an intermediate/ advanced skill competitive room and beyond (at least from the 250+ hours I’ve played MK8DX since Sept. 2022) the 4th-9th positions are way too easy to get limboed into no matter what you do, sandwiched between constant barrages of triple greens, triple reds, stars, fireballs, boomerangs and piranha plants if the podium-positioned players are far ahead of everyone else.

Mario kart is designed to equalize everyone. If you suck, there are many tools that help get you further ahead. If you're good, there are many tools others use against you to pull you back.

I think inherently it was designed to be a party game played casually, and only got a more dedicated fanbase after the fact.

This reminds me of a dream I had where I played Mario Kart 8 with my family and I was first and far ahead.
But then there were 6 Blue shells approaching me all delayed so I need to stop for every single one and then I was 11th and lost.
Mario Kart can screw you over very hardly.

In online rooms, id say that i get bottom 1/3 about ad much ad i get first, so whenever tjis happens, i know that i will in time pull off the sweetest comeback of the century and get first.

For some reason this always happens to me on Cheep Cheep Beach on the last part of the tropical jungle section on the last lap. I'm first for the whole race and suddenly a barrage of Red shells hits me one by one, resulting in usually around 5th place. I've been so frustrated by this, since it happens on this specific track on a specific part
