Read EEPROM Data Without a Microcontroller

Note: This video has been moved to my new personal, non-gaming channel.

In this project I constructed a circuit that would allow me to read the data from an EEPROM without using an Arduino or similar microcontroller. The EEPROM is a 256 byte Atmel 93C56 I desoldered from something years ago. Clock pulses are provided by a standard 555 timer chip. I input data to the chip using the pushbutton in the middle of the board and am able to watch as the chip writes out the data stored in the specified memory address.

This is obviously not a practical method to extract or program data onto a chip, but moreso just proof that you don't need a KHz or MHz clock speed or a microcontroller to interface with these chips.

Here is the the schematic:
Some notes - I'm not too great at drawing these yet so sorry it's a bit busy looking! The 5M resistor is actually a few 1Ms in series.... I'm still working on some more elegant 555 designs.

Nice idea. How can other addresses be read and used ?

Hello sir, I am using pcb 5.0 Willem Eeprom Programmer and do not have a model for a chip but have socket, is it possible to make it and pay someone to add that chip to be supported? Atmel AT27C512R

Very nice demo. Not much practical applicability, but great proof of concept. Communication is on SPI, right?
