The movie "The Exorcist" was inspired by a real case involving a 14-year-old who underwent a series of exorcisms in Cottage City, Maryland, and St. Louis, Missouri, in 1949. The teen was given the alias “Ronald Doe,” and the writer of "The Exorcist" novel, William Peter Blatty, first heard of the possession and exorcisms from his professor at Georgetown University, who was also a priest.

Things all started when Ronald and his family began hearing knocking and scratching sounds behind his bedroom walls. Over time, things continued to escalate, until the family's minister reached out to the Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University in North Carolina, after witnessing chairs in the family's home moving on their own and Ronald’s bed shaking when he lay in it. The priest also reported how a photo of Jesus hanging on the walls would shake whenever Ronald was near it.
