I've been self-taught for about a year. I didn't start taking the barre chords serious until a few months ago and still have a hard time with them. I tried this technique and instantly noticed a difference and improvement without my hand cramping up.

You're absolutely right! Makes changes between chords so much faster and cleaner!

Thanks for this Ricky, I've been playing barre chords this way for 30 + years and never even considered that it suddenly got easier as I'd ditched 1st finger down first after just a few weeks of playing . I'm amazed at the amount of beginning guitarists that give up trying to play barre chords altogether . As a not technical (sloppy) guitarist, I now realize that my advice to stick with it because "If I can do it anyone can " obviously isn't helping . From today I'll will be passing on this tip and sharing the video with anyone who is stuck .

It took me almost ten years to know the method you are demonstrating in this Video now. Todays students are very fortunate because these fundamentals are now available in the internet. Thank you

I think this method is great and makes the most sense.

Finally I find something that actually works. I'm working on the CAGED system. Moving the shapes around the fretboard is killing me. I just tried your little trick here and it opened up a whole new level. Thank you so much.

Make C shape then barre, A shape barre, G shape barre, E shape barre, D shape barre, Nice. The Caged system is the biggest shortcut to leaning chords on the guitar. Thanks for the instructions.

I’ve been trying to teach myself guitar since the beginning of the pandemic… barre chords have always eluded me due to my non dominant fingers not being able to move as well with the damn barre down FIRST!…. Of course it makes perfect sense to put the barre down afterwards… it just took Ricky to point it out!… thanks mate!… I’m in my music room 2 minutes after watching this video and it’s already sounding better!

I stumbled upon this method when I was learning barre chords, but I didn't think to use the middle finger as a scout. That would be a lot easier. Putting your third finger down first for five string barres is brilliant! It makes so much sense!

Exactly what my teacher taught me... I've only heard this from him and you 👌🏻

One thing I can add after much trial and error that I think would have helped me a bunch had I known from the start: it's good to try to get the form exactly correct and build the muscle memory - but don't *obsess* over that...try playing the chord as downstrums and upstrums as soon as you get reasonably ok with forming it... Reason: in *practice* - played at speed - you are usually strumming some portion of the chord...a lot of times the lower (bass) portion on the downstrum and catching the higher strings as you strum back up thru them... so you don't have to have a perfectly formed full chord every time...fragments work a LOT of the time. Experiment and see how things sound !
