Growing up in the 80's, before cellphones, we only had landlines and you'd enter the * code, and wait a second for the dial tone then dial the number. Back then, you had to pay for caller ID, which the phone company would provide a small electronic display box that hooked up before the phone. Later, they made phones with the ID screen built in; you still had to pay extra for it. We also used, *69, in case someone called, and if you didn't have caller ID, and you wanted to know who called. Downside you'd have to enter it before you got another call.
