This is the reason why I love old cars, you have to wake up the beast first and then you can go easily, not like modern cars where you don't know if the engine is running after you turn the key

12 cylinder perfection, only real gear heads can appreciate this 👍

He's got so many cars he doesn't know where the key goes

It just doesn't get any better than this I was surprised how quiet it was when idling it goes to show that they are and were years ahead of any other super car...👋🏻👌🏼

That engine is a work of masterpiece.

I guess everyones an expert here when it comes to revving cold engines, including me. I dont know every detail but I know the 250 gto engine was a purpose built endurance engine (hence the gt in the name) with a dry sump oiling system. Ive turned wrenches on quite a few cars and engines and having to rev up or blip the throttle alot on a cold race engine after startup (especially without idle circuits or a choke) was necessary. Someones shitty little 4 cylinder daily driver and a v12 built for 24hr lemans are going to be quite different inside and out. You can always count on youtube to bring out the mechanical engineering genius in everyone.

I once Worked on both a 250 SWB and 275 GTB/4. I got the pleasure of Hearing both Ferrari V12 Engines Start. Boy, what a glorious Sound!

I saw one of these race at mid Ohio in 1963, I' ll never forget that beautiful shriek !

My previous car fitted with dual Weber 44 IDF carbs would not let me get away with throttle blips if it was left outside.
The start up procedure was... pump the throttle 1-2 times to get some fuel down the intake manifold from the acceleration circuit... turn the key to fire the engine...wait for the idle to smooth out before driving off.
The carbs tend to be a bit more forgiving inside a warm garage.
I still would have waited a bit longer to goose the throttle.
That'd give the internals just a bit more time to expand and oil pressure a bit longer to stabilize...especially since the car is garaged.

An amazing looking engine. Though with my few times trying to synchronize 4 carbs on a bike, I cannot even imagine the headache that would be caused by trying to sync all those! Best left to the pros I’m sure

He's not revving it very high. Remember, it's 12 cylinders, so it sounds like it's revving higher than it actually is. I'm guessing he didn't even exceed 3000 RPM.

All sides are correct regarding the cold engine. One one hand, it's best to let the oil temperature warm up before revving it -- and the Columbo V12's take a LONG time for the oil temperature to come up to operating temperature (usually 10 or 15 minutes, much longer than the water temp). On the other hand, he isn't revving it that high, so he isn't really damaging it with those blips. Most experts say the best warmup is to hold it steady at about 3k RPM's immediately after starting cold - which is a happy medium between getting oil pressure up while not revving it too high while the engine tolerances are tight as a result of the engine (metal) being cold.

Many experts actually discourage blipping the throttle (whether the engine is cold or hot) on these cars because raw fuel can wash into the combustion chamber and down the cylinder walls, ever so slightly thinning out the oil over time. I don't know if I believe this or not, nor do I know why Ferrari would be different than any other car in this respect, but I've heard it said often enough that there is probably some truth to it.

I have a v12... at 3k rpm it sounds like a i6 at 6k rpm.... he really is not over reving it ... he never took it above 3.5k rpm, rewatched vid... ok he might have got to 4k rpm, now at 6k rpm they sound lovely!

Watch it with the throttle blips, don't hard rev a cold engine or you'll bend the valves.
