🌱 What substrate do you prefer to grow plants in?

I started experimenting with soil alternatives very early on in my plant journey. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spilled dirt on a freshly-cleaned floor! 😓 And the fungus gnats were driving me insane!

LECA (clay pebbles) was the first soilless substrate I tried and boy, did I learn a lot! I discovered that the plants that did best in LECA were ones with thicker roots like Monsteras, Orchids, and Peace Lillies. But all my philodendrons hated it!

Right around when I started getting interested in Alocasias is when I learned of another soil free substrate called Lechuza Pon. It’s comprised of lava rock and pumice and has much finer particles compared to LECA. After I saw how well all my alocasias did in pon, I tried using it on my Philodendrons. And shockingly— they thrived in pon as well!

Now, I gauge what substrate to grow my plants in based on their roots. Plants with fine roots I almost always grow in Lechuza pon, whereas thicker-rooted plants get LECA.

Of course, there are still plants I will always grow in soil— like my Hoyas, succulents, and trailing plants. 🪴

Does this match your experience? Tell me why or why not!
