N-Channel and P-Channel Depletion type MOSFET Construction, Working principle, Symbols, Characteristics, and Applications Explained

IG-FET (Insulated Gate Field Effect Transistor) or
MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) is the most common type of IG-FET, where a layer of SiO2 is used as an insulating layer to insulate the Gate from the channel.

The MOSFET can be further classified into
Depletion-type MOSFET (N-channel and P-channel)
Enhancement-Type MOSFET (N-channel and P-channel)

N-channel Depletion type MOSFET:
The entire N-channel DMOSFET is constructed on a block of P-type semiconductor material called Substrate. Two heavily doped N-type semiconductors are diffused on this substrate, Source and Drain terminals are brought out through metallic contacts from these two N-regions, and another heavily doped N-region is added between the Drain and Source regions, Now the entire surface of the substrate is coated with silicon dioxide. On this layer, a thin metallic plate is attached and the Gate terminal is brought out from this metallic plate, So the Gate terminal is insulated with the channel.

P-channel Depletion type MOSFET:
A P-channel DMOSFET is similar in construction, except it uses N-type Substrate and P-type channels.
The entire P-channel DMOSFET is constructed on a block of N-type semiconductor material called Substrate. Two heavily doped P-type semiconductors are diffused on this substrate, Source and Drain terminals are brought out through metallic contacts from these two P-regions, and another heavily doped P-region is added between the Drain and Source regions, Now the entire surface of the substrate is coated with silicon dioxide. On this layer, a thin metallic plate is attached and the Gate terminal is brought out from this metallic plate, So the Gate terminal is insulated with the channel.

Applications of Depletion type MOSFET:
Depletion type MOSFET's are generally used where an application demands current flow at zero Gate voltage.
1) Start-up circuit of SMPS,
2) Surge protection for Linear voltage regulators,
3) Constant current source,
4) High-voltage ramp generator,
5) High-voltage protection circuit,
6) Solid-state relay

Can I get a reply? Is P channel means for positive, and N channel for negative, . or it's the other way around?.
