The CircumBaikal track from Port Baikal to Irkutsk was abandoned because the track was submerged when a large hydroelectric dam was built on the Angara River near Irkutsk. Very slow trains still cover the original route between Slydyanka and Port Baikal and tourist excursions are also available. Rode that route in 2016.

Thank you for the dramatic scenes of Lake Baikal. It was dark when my train passed by the lake so I didn't see a thing - and the lake was one of the main reasons I wanted to explore Siberia in the first place!

Actually I'm seeing and learning more from your video trip than I did on my Trans-Mongolian/Siberian tour in 2011. I didn't enjoy riding and sleeping in 4-bed cabin so I upgraded to first class on last leg of the trip and that was a whole different ballgame because I had the cabin to myself for most of time until I was joined by a beautiful Russian soldier. Thanks again because I'm really enjoying the virtual ride.
