Aperture is a camera setting that controls how much light enters the lens. Imagine your camera is a window with curtains (the aperture). Opening the curtains (increasing the aperture) lets more light in, while closing them (decreasing the aperture) lets less light in.

Aperture is measured in "f-stops" (like f/2.8 or f/16). A small f-stop number (like f/2.8) means a big aperture opening, letting lots of light in. A large f-stop number (like f/16) means a small aperture opening, letting less light in.

Think of it like this:

- Small f-stop number (big aperture): More light, shallow focus (subject in focus, background blurry)
- Large f-stop number (small aperture): Less light, deep focus (more of the image in focus)

By adjusting the aperture, you control the amount of light and the depth of focus in your photos.

Does "stopping down" mean going to a higher aperture >> f1.4 for example, or does it mean moving towards a smaller aperture >> f22 ? I find this term very confusing.

I think you are simplifying too much for this to be a comprehensive explanation to someone who is not familiar with or new to cameras
