Introductory Numerical Optimization Examples

This video is part of the first set of lectures for SE 413, an engineering design optimization course at UIUC. In this course students are provided with an early opportunity to gain initial experience with optimization functions in MATLAB. This video motivates the need for understanding numerical optimization solution methods in the context of engineering design optimization (EDO), and makes a distinction between general mathematical optimization problems, and EDO problems that specifically provide a decision model for practical engineering design problems. This video lecture provides two simple 'toy' mathematical optimization problems. Both are constrained. The first is univariate; the second is bivariate. MATLAB code is created and executed, including both optimization problem visualization and solution. The following two videos are incorporated into this lecture:
