How to remove the compartment of the battery

Battery was supposed to last 10 years. This one lasted one year. Attempt to change battery involved carefully reading directions on back of alarm; and doing exactly as it directed. Then resorting to 2 youtube vids with no success. This puppy is going to the burn pile.
