I will never disrespect your trade. Being a good arborist requires a lot of skill. However, when it came to my yard, I chose to do it myself. I rented a lift, 400$ for 2 days, new chain for my old saw 65$, and a new milwaukee saw. Some rigging was required, but I climbed towers for years, so trolly lines and self tagging were no issue. The prices I got from companies ranged from 4700 to 7500. Not paying that when I am capable. I chose not to climb because when I said I did it myself that's exactly what I ment. I never climb alone. That would be stupid

I remember working in a hospital, emergency patients. Some older guy who works in your industry did fall down because he did cut his safety belt by mistake. Be safe out there!

My dad and I did this ourselves, but it required rope, pulleys, new safety gear, and a new saw. And most importantly, the patience to do it right. We spent a whole afternoon roping up our trees and making sure we had plenty of room for safety and then my dad and I took turns cutting the notches in the trees while the other person manned the ropes to make sure they fell the correct directions. All good. Was incredibly fun, but we were lucky in that we had plenty of room to "mess up" if something fell the wrong way.

A few years ago, we needed to have a diseased ash tree removed. It was 100 years old, absolutely massive, and hung over the house, fence, and road. There was no way in hell that we would even consider the "rent equipment and DIY" route.
I watched the arborists use a cherry picker to get up there, tie ropes, cut branches, while the guys on the ground pulled the ropes to make the sections of branches clear the obstacles. Then when they cut the main trunk into pieces they were so heavy they could not pick them up with their skid loader, and had to cut them smaller. Oh yes it cost for that tree but I saw that you get what you pay for.

Been there before did a job for a guy I bid it for a little over 2k. I was half done in 2 hours and the guy said that he was in the wrong business and that I was over charging. I had 2 trees left I said I will take a 1, 000 off the price if he finishes the job I sad you can use my climbing gear and saws. I said make sure you don’t knock out the power to the neighborhood and don’t drop anything on your house or your cars! He looked at me like I had Lobster crawling out of my ears! Needless to say he didn’t touch my gear I finished the job he paid me. Just because someone makes something look easier than it seems doesn’t mean it’s isn’t difficult! I assume all the risk and am responsible for any and all damages not only his stuff but my thousands of dollars of gear saws truck and everything else that is involved with it. Timber work and tree removal is the most deadlines jobs in America! You don’t make many mistakes in this industry and live to tell about it. And if you do you are going to have some permanent scars to show for it.

I've felled a lot of trees with my dad being the rope guy. I'd be okay but not with running the saw. This is a hard job haha. We dropped Locust tree branches above my childhood home and I was pissing myself. Though it was not at all OSHA approved like these fine folks. They're so skilled.

I respect this trade. Cutting down a tall tree in a small space like that requires a lot of special equipment and skill to the point that I'd rather hire experts.

If it was the same tree but on property that is wide and with no structures or people nearby, then I could probably just cut the bottom myself and only worry about my safety.

Worked with an arborist over the summer. That work isn't a joke. Nor is it easy. Still the best experience I've had.

My dad cut down a 25ft tree with just ladders and a truck to to pull it. It was a fun 3 and half days 😂
