I would have this issue a lot, especially as a teenager. Started flossing every night, used mouth wash, and switched to a good electric toothbrush. Never happens to me anymore.

Today I got the gum flap removed because my wisdom tooth was completely fine but the pain was immeasurable. So happy that i went to dentist.

I'm 19 and I just experienced this. The pain is out of this world I taught I could just wait it out like regular tooth ache but after watching this I'm going to the dentist first thing tomorrow. Thanks

You guys- please go see your dentist or go to urgent care. My pain started on Saturday, I saw my dentist Monday, got prescribed antibiotics and strong painkillers. After 2 days of antibiotics, I already feel so much symptom relief. And I was bawling my eyes out with how bad the pain was. Get the wisdom teeth removed as well. I’m doing that next week. Avoiding medical care is not worth the pain. I promise you, seeing a doc will be your best bet, the salt water rinses alone aren’t enough.

Very Very Helpful this is exactly what is happening to me! I have so much pain in my bottom right wisdom tooth and it is partially covered with my gums, I will see a dentist tomorrow. I hope they can fix it soon, taking out the tooth sounds scary but also a good long term solution.

I've had this a couple of times. Avoid sugar. I recommend using hydrogen peroxide to brush that area and OIL PULLING. IT WORK. Now it will come back in months or years if it's not dealt with by removing the tooth. In the meantime I recommend garlic, oil pulling and hydrogen peroxide.

I’ve had an unusual experience with this based on everything I’ve heard-
I have a VERY rubbish pain tolerance and have been trooping through 5 days of mild pain, a slightly tender neck, a bit of difficulty with eating BUT nothing more than I would usually experience with a wisdom tooth flare up.
No swelling, no severe pain, no reason to worry.

Saw the dentist for a check up just to see how my wisdom was coming in. He pressed on the flap/my gum and said there was pus coming out and it was infected!?!

Day 2 of antibiotics, back for a checkup and to see what needs to be done on Monday 🤞🏻

I chewed the flap off. I have no idea how it didn’t become infected.

Went through this last year. My right wisdom erupting pain came and left for about 2 months. Fully erupted pain is gone. This year is the left one. I’m not ready to experience this pain again. It’s the worst.

I have this condition with the gum flap on both sides in my mouth, couple of years ago it started to hurt really bad in the right side, so I went to the dentist, they removed the gum (because it was cheaper than removing the tooth) and I was told to clean the area with some chlorhexidine.

Forward another year, it started to happen again but in the other side, this time the dentist (I moved town so I had a different dentist) did not want to remove the gum but instead the whole tooth, but in order for him to do that they needed to get the swelling of the gum reduced, so I was given medicine and more chlorhexidine as well as a small needle that I could use to spray the chlorhexidine behind the tooth. I ended up recovering fully and decided not to have my tooth removed because the chlorhexidine did the job just fine. The swelling went away and everything went back to normal. I check every night after I brush my teeth if I can see food under the gum flap, if I can I take the needle and fill it up either with water or chlorhexidine and just flush it out. I also every now and then stick it really far back under the gum (I know it sounds weird) to flush out the back of the tooth. The chlorhexidine seems to prevent this issue from recurring.

However last night I noticed some pain in that area again, it does not seem swollen up but when I put the needle under the flap/far in its sore (not the flap), I've run out of chlorhexidine but have ordered a new bottle and I hope it will solve this. Flushing with water does not seem to "extract" any pus or food leftovers, so I really don't know if this is Pericoronitis or just my wisdom tooth moving again. If the pain doesn't go away in the next couple of days I will probably see a dentist and have them remove the gum flap.
Sorry for this long comment, I just thought I'd share my experience with everyone out there who might be encountering this issue.

Edit*
It was Pericoronitis, it became super painful and I have been unable to fully close my mouth since the day after writing this comment. I took penicillin and chlorhexidine and it helped a bit, but I am having my wisdom tooth extracted tomorrow. I did not think this was going to happen.

The dentist removed my gum flap when I was 17 so my teeth can grow in perfectly. I am 42 and still have all my teeth including all 4 wisdom teeth
