HOW BILLIE EILISH - WILDFLOWER WAS MADE

"Wildflower" is a song by American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish and the fourth single from her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft (2024). She wrote the track with her brother and its producer, Finneas O'Connell. A folk-pop song, "Wildflower" sees Eilish consoling her friend after a breakup only to later begin dating the friend's ex-boyfriend, and the guilt she felt as a result.

Genre: Folk-pop
Length 4:21
Label: Darkroom Interscope
Songwriter: Billie Eilish Finneas O'Connell
Producer: Finneas O'Connell

Even though Eilish had never clarified who the song is about, it was later reported that multiple lines in the song allude to her relationship with Devon Lee Carlson, the ex-girlfriend of Jesse Rutherford whom she herself dated from October 2022 to May 2023. The song's title is believed to be a reference to Wildflower Cases, a company founded by Carlson. In a deeper analysis, Alex Hopper of American Songwriter opined that "Wildflower" serves as a "pseudo apology" to Carlson, in which Eilish depicts the end of their relationship. It showcases the singer as a "candid and honest" songwriter who does not shy away from highlighting her "rough edges"

Upon release, Billboard ranked "Wildflower" as their favorite song from its parent album. According to writer Hannah Dailey, the "soulful and gloomy" song encompasses her "most mature songwriting yet", crafted to make "a complex story look simple" as she obsesses over her partner's ex-girlfriend.

Dating your friend’s ex in this scenario is so messed up.

This song is so beautiful, especially since as a child she wrote Bad Guy as a jokey song about this kind of scenario. Then Wildflower came out of the real experience of making a morally gray decision. Bad Guy has this air of pride, and this song is seeped in pain. It's just such an incredible shift of perspective that really illustrates what it means to mature as a person. So amazing to witness her journey through life in this way.

For me this song is like PTSD.. someone who hurt you and you always hear their voice in the back of your head, ready to hurt you again. Truly, a beautiful and powerful song❤

It’s essentially on this one girl called Devon Lee Carlson, the runner of “Wildflower Cases”. Devon Lee and Jesse Rutherford (Jesse is Billie’s ex) we’re in a serious relationship for around 6 years, and after they broke up (or during the last parts of their relationship) Billie met Devon. They were friends and after the break up Devon was devastated and came to Billie for support, hence the lyrics “She was crying’ on my shoulder/ All I could do was hold her/ Only made us closer until JULY” July is the month Jesse and Billie started dating. So while saying “I see hee in the back of my mind all the time” is really saying that the thought of dating someone who was dated a close one before is haunting, thus constantly affecting their relationship, “Feels like a fever, like i’m burning alive, all the time.”. This line has different meanings too. In the song, Billie says that “Did I cross the line?”, thinking and bringing up her lover’s ex Devon up a lot, hence crossing the line of Jesse’s old life. This apparently somehow caused Jesse to hurt Billie without realizing, which Billie kept a secret, explaining the lyrics “I know you didn’t mean to hurt me, so I kept it to myself.”

One mystery remains though, what happened on Valentine’s day, and what made Billie cry? For this, we have to go a bit further to “The Diner”. The song takes the perspective of a stalker, which the stalker isn’t Billie. It’s actually an ex. Not exactly sure which one. Billie is now dating a girl, right? (Skinny was about the struggles of fame and everyone watching every move, Lunch was about discovering her sexuality, Chihiro was the meeting of Jesse, Birds of a Feather was love with Jesse, Wildflower was breaking point in a relationship, The greatest was the struggle of her new possible wlw relationship on how she kept coming and going (taking breaks etc.), L’amour de ma vie was about two perspectives and one side the regret of thy ex and on one side billie where we are introduced to billie’s new girl lover, the diner is about the ex spying on billie and new girl lover but catching lover cheating, bittersuite is about lover cheating with a man and filling the hole billie could never fill because she is a girl and finally blue is after the breakup.) So, The Diner is in perspective of the stalker, an ex. The ex spies on Billie and sees a man “I saw you in the car with someone and I couldn’t sleep. If something happens to him you can bet that it was me” saying that Billie was being cheated on by lover with another man. WHAT? I know. Then, at Bittersuite we see Lover cheating on Billie oversees with a man, saying that there were holes that only a man could fill (pun intended) and that Billie wasn’t enough for lover. Back to Wildflower, we hear that “Valentines day crying in the hotel/ I know you didn’t mean to hurt me, so I kept it to myself.” so the person crying is actually lover who cheated. The story goes into depth in Blue, but this is long enough

The almost meditative anguish on her face as she sings in this clip reminds me of old time Jazz and Blues singers. You can really see the old soul emanate from within when she’s in the zone. ❤

I‘m in awe of The Greatest and Blue but Wildflower will somehow always be closest to my heart. It just has so much soul. It‘s so human. People saying „this is so messed up“ are missing the point, or maybe not seeing the full picture. The point is that we all (or most of us I‘m assuming) do things that venture too far sometimes. That we can only recognize as a bad move once it‘s too late. To be swept up in the intensity of fresh emotions or in old habits is so, so human. And you have to live with the guilt of knowing you shouldn‘t have said/done this, but of course, that doesn‘t erase it from reality.
It‘s such an achingly beautiful song and so full of sorrow, I can‘t help but feel so deeply when I listen to it.
