Arri anounced the Arri Alexa 35 and killed the resolution race. It says a whole lot when the leading camera manufactorer makes a camera at 4.6k and a super 35mm sensor size.

It is just these priorities that Arri have always focused on that has made their cameras the reference standard of the film industry. I normally work in broadcast but a few years ago the BBC came to Sweden to film a special Gothia Cup edition of their long running Jamie Johnson drama show. We used four Arrri Alexa minis but what shocked me was that everything was shot at 1080P and ProRes 422 (not even HQ). However, it was four days of shooting and hours of footage from each camera everyday with a DTI backing up as we shot. This shows that in the real world of production even when using the best gear, compromises are made to gain the final result. With this new Arri 35 camera they obviously know what the industry (outside of YouTube) needs and based their decision to create a camera with the best image being more important to those customers over that of pure resolution!🙏🏾

I love this decision they made. smaller resolution also means smaller file size and less useless information we don't need that takes up storage space

Hearing interviews with the top cinematographers I would say your interpretation of spot on. Image quality trumps resolution. I remember an interview with Roger Deakins on the film 1917 speaking on this very issue.

Image sharpness has nothing to do with 8k 6k 12k or 4k. it's the lenses you place in front of the sensor that's makes it sharp or soft.

Great insight, as usual. Definitely think color science is more important than resolution.

I can understand the resolution part. But why not a full frame? It bringa another astetic to the picture.

4.6k is more than enough. other manufacturers should also focus on better dynamic range and colors.

'Arri telling us what's important' - this alone qualifies the position you adopt. Arri's use case and indeed business model means they gravitate toward a particular approach, but it remains one approach not the only one and it would be terrible if other manufacturers regarded pursuing any other objective as 'dumb'.

Interesting aspect of the ingoing xK-race. 👍✨ Having shot video on Sony a7smk1-3, FS5 and (recently) FX6 since 2015 I could not agree more. Arri is a bit out of bounds for me personaly but the rational seem sound. It’s really about color science and a lot of other things - not about winning the xK-race.

I intend to purchase the Sony A74 and use it as my own Arri Alexa 35mm

This is a very good idea, though the old 35mm lenses will still vignette a little on that sensor, so wide framing and then cropping in post might be required. Essentially the jury is out until we see real-life images from this camera. I don't like the images they have used as demonstration so far, but demo images always look a bit artificial to me.

I always preferred the Pocket 4k over the Pocket 6k because I feel the 6k is too sharp. I feel the GH5 was too sharp so I sold mine, I feel the S5 is too sharp for cinema but great for many things like music videos and other things. I feel your video here it’s too sharp for cinema with this Sony camera😆

The separation from the background is very distracting, I’m just being honest, the frame needs to be cohesive. If I just need to see just you, that what head shots are for.

How you look it this video, your are sharp, it looks like you are in front of a green screen and aren’t really where you are. It doesn’t look like you’re really there. Sorry it doesn’t look natural, it’s too dang sharp! I know people are going to argue because they want to defend their purchases🤷🏽‍♂️ IDC.

I have a Pocket 4k and never cared to play the resolution game. People always say “I want to reframe”😆 so you’re going to reframe everything you shoot😆 ok have fun with that, I render on 1080 i reframe too😀

Well, edit options from 8K are very useful and REDUCE PRODUCTION COSTS! Aero has a fan base. This is not logical.
