CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Betty (Sally Field) pleads to Moody's (Alfred Molina) family to help her leave Iran and explains Moody's blasphemous lie about their visit.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War.

The only 2 who showed compassion towards her were her daughter and her sister in law. Even though her sister in law was not allowed to go and comfort her, you could see it in her face that she was listening with compassion and wishing she could help. I think in the end she too helped her get out of the country though.

Whenever you’re having troubles with your in-laws, come back and watch this. Should make you feel a bit better.

That film has some of the best acting I've ever seen. Not only Sally is breathtaking - also the family is perfectly cast. They play these fanatics so incredibly convincing, you could forget they are just actors.

Wow, she was suddenly living a nightmare. Glad she escaped safely with her little girl.

You cannot watch this movie without feeling hatred for that man.

Even though I can't speak the language it's obvious from his body language that he wasn't fully translating everything she was saying. But even if he had they wouldn't have sided with her because she is woman & foreign.

that one lady felt sorry for her but she couldn’t do anything, but if she did... she would’ve got a wild beating. These people are violent.

If only she had known what it actually means to "swear on the Koran" which sanctions deception whenever it is in the interest of Islam.

They don't like her. They really don't like her.

The only ones who had any compassion for her were Zoreh and Nasserine. They told her in the book they felt bad for her and wanted to help but we're afraid of getting in trouble with their family. Ameh bozorg started being nicer to her after moody stole mahtob from Betty for weeks. She made him take Mahtob back to Betty.

One of the most powerful scenes of the film.

Abuse in a marriage can happen in any religion. Still it may be best for American women to stay state side:)

I find Moody’s sister more terrifying than Moody himself 😟

As a swedish citizen I was forced to live in Egypt by my parents when I was little and I hated the life there. And I don't think the swedish embassy could help me either. I think they would say "You are not 18 yet and your parents deside".

Wow as I Muslim myself that lady has the right to do whatever she wants. That husband is a coward. Those people yelling at her should mind their own business. How dare they twist the word of the quaran!

How Sally field could even be considered for Razzie recognition for such an excellent performance I will never understand. Can someone also explain to me why this film was not more commercially successful?

Funny part is, the women were telling her in Farsi “Go back to America” yet that was the one thing she wanted and couldn’t do.
