An S-type thermocouple is a type of temperature sensor that employs two specific metal alloys to generate a voltage in response to changes in temperature. It is composed of two different materials: platinum (Pt) and rhodium (Rh).

The positive leg (or conductor) of the S-type thermocouple is made of pure platinum (Pt), while the negative leg consists of a platinum-rhodium alloy, specifically PtRh10 (90% platinum, 10% rhodium). This combination of noble metals allows the S-type thermocouple to provide accurate and stable temperature measurements over a wide temperature range.

S-type thermocouples are commonly used in industries that involve high-temperature processes, such as metallurgy, ceramics, and some aerospace applications. The temperature range for which S-type thermocouples are suitable extends from around -50 degrees Celsius to approximately 1,600 degrees Celsius (-58 to 2,912 degrees Fahrenheit). They are known for their stability, accuracy, and durability in demanding temperature measurement environments.

It's important to note that thermocouples, including the S-type, require proper calibration to ensure accurate temperature readings. Calibration compensates for any deviations from the ideal behavior of the thermocouple, improving measurement accuracy.
