I have both of these and have experimented with both. Despite most people saying that Magewell is more high end in terms of picture quality, I personally, notice zero difference in picture quality between the two of them (assuming resolution, bitrate, source footage is the same for both). They both output beautiful picture. The only downside to the Magewell that I have noticed is that it doesn't come with its own software, while the Elgato of course does (Game Capture HD). It will work with OBS Studio, but it's not as simple to use as the Elgato's capture software. You need to kind of experiment with it. I can't speak much on streaming because I don't do any of that. But if you are strictly recording, I can't imagine there being a noticeable, if any, of a difference as far as the final product (the video). Both are top tier.
