Autocratic Leadership Style

Autocratic leadership is one of the three leadership styles. In this video, we'll look at its definition, examples, characteristics, and skills. We see this authoritarian style exaggerated in movies but in real life management, the autocratic leadership style has both strengths and weaknesses. This is the first video in a three-part series on the autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire styles.

What Captain Sobo in the band of brothers is an example to that. This is military, it is not exactly a ground for democracy, he can be judged as harsh or easygoing at most but as a superior officer, he is not to debate with his inferiors while making decisions. And Darth Sidious should be used instead of Darth Vader as well.

Technically authoritarian means non-pluralistic. Which basically means a society that does not have multiple centers of power. Our society doesn’t have multiple centers of power simultaneously - we take turns. Most people mean autocratic when they say authoritarian. And autocratic is when there is no difference between the law and the opinion of the ruler/s.

This style needs to be renamed to something with less negative connotations. It's not like we call laissez-faire leadership style as anarchical leadership style (although we probably should). I say rename autocratic leadership style to something like top-down leadership style.

PS - I consider myself democratic leadership style but I would much prefer an autocratic leader any day over the dreaded laissez-faire one. At least the autocratic leader is doing their job and earning their higher pay even if I don't agree with their method. Unlike the laissez-faire ones of whom I don't know what they do all day. As a democratic style when I seek input horizontally from a laissez-faire, I get nothing but a blank face glowing with a lack of knowledge/technical expertise and get more value from one of their team members who get paid less and do more
