Power upgrades for the 289 | A better breathing engine

A highly recommended upgrade for anyone with a classic that needs a bit more grunt. The Edelbrock Aluminum Intake Combined with the 4 barrel Summit M2008 Carburetor made a perfect power sandwich for the 289 sbf. Although there was a couple modifications needed it was a fairly simple installation. Thinking about using this exact set up on our #3 project.

The guide bolt idea is awesome. I’m going to steal that.👍

I build a simple 289 years ago. 66 block 40 over with flattops, 477 471 crower solid lifter cam with a wide duration. Ported 66 heads with 195 chevy valves. Electronic ignition and a old offy360 intake with 600 edlebrock. Long tube header and full length 2.5 inch exaust. 64 falcon with a 5 speed. No super fast but a nasty little bird that surprised a few big block cars.

Nice car, great to see young guys keeping the passion going. Always like the 289, built a few years back, they really respond well to the right bolt on's.

500 AFB and AVS work really well on the small V-8s

I did this exact same modification to my 68 Mustang back in 1980 when I was in high school. Went from a two-barrel cast iron intake to a four barrel aluminum Edelbrock, with a Holly four barrel carburetor, Hedman long tube headers, Thrush turbo flow mufflers. I did it all in one weekend. Engine woke up.

That Summit carb looks like a Holley. A tech at Holley told me about modifying a vacuum secondary carb by opening the round vacuum diaphragm and removing the ball bearing that resides in there. Geez, that thing drove like a double pumper! My 67 was already only getting 7 mpgs so I put the ball bearing back in. It was fun spinning the tires though.

Pretty car. Love the way those rolled exhaust tips make it pop. Lots more left with that little 289. Legendary engine. Put a gear in the back of it and watch it come to life!

That looks like a lot of fun. Wish I still had my old shop. A fella I knew liked to put sintered screens between the carb and intake....a series of 3 sintered screens. He said he could dial back on the fuel jets for better mileage. Headers, ignition and high gears were addressed as well. All this on a 3/4 ton Chev 350 4 bolt. Narrow tall tires. 23 was not bad for that year...lots of torque. Thanks for triggering a memory....good times.

You can actually swap out the intake without removing the distributor. It's a little tricky, but I did it. Good video.!

Ahhhh... I had that manifold when I was in high school in 1974 exactly 50 years ago this summer, on my 67 Mustang that I lost my virginity in, LOL That was a sweet engine with a 650, but honestly, it was that 500 Holley 2 barrel that I think really made that engine come alive! Fun video, thanks!

Great video. I would love to see also the process and your approach of fine tuning the ignition timing and the carb itself. That would be really awsome.

Dear A.R.P.
👍👌👏 Very well done again (video and work). You're such a likeable person with a big positive aura and always a smile on your face. I hope and wish you that you can keep it that way. 2) The beautiful Mustang runs and sounds great. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next video.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all of you.

I had a 69 with a 302 and I didn't notice much of a change switching the intake and carburetor like you did. But it did wake up when I replaced the cam. It gave it a power band, kind of like those 2-stroke dirt bikes.
