I gotta give intimidation to the Doberman. Rotties can look scary when they're angry but they're usually just kinda floofy and huggable.

As a Rottie owner, and an previous owner of golden retrievers, labs, and German shepherds I can say my favorite is the Rottie. Without being aggressive she is intimating to strangers. She loved my grandkids and is was so smart she could read your mind. She was also a very calm and so easy to train. I had to put her down last week because she could no longer walk. My wife and I are still grieving.

Growing up, as a kid, my family first had a European Doberman and then a Rottweiler. The reason, we lived in the middle of nowhere and my parents wanted protection without owning a gun. Here is my take on both breeds:

E. Doberman - this is a probably the smartest dog I have ever seen. Training this dog was easy. Show her something a couple of times and she got it. She was our dog. There were 5 members of our family and that is who she was loyal to. No one was allowed to enter or leave our house without a member of the family acknowledging the person presence. People were afraid of her because of the bad rap the breed has. She was always in control. Oh and she was really, really fast as well as agile. They really did not talk about how these dogs are large; yet they can change directions quickly. Rabbits did not live on our property because the Doberman would chase them and run them down. She never killed any; just exhaused the rabbit to the point it could not run anymore. She knew where all the rabbit holes were; so she would run the rabbits away from the holes. It was a sport for her until the rabbits moved off the property.

The Rottweiler was very different. This dogs was trainable but stubborn. Whereas the Doberman you could train with praise, the Rottie was praise and treats. She did nothing unless you trained her belly too. Owning a Rottie is great because EVERYONE is afraid of this dog, This dog was far more intimidating then the Doberman. Speed wise in a straight line, she was probably faster than the Doberman and our Doberman was really fast. The issue with the Rottie's speed is she had no cornering ability. Her version of chasing a rabbit was to chase the rabbit and then crash into a fence, patio furniture, or fall down because she could not corner like the Doberman. I know if I was ever chased by both breeds: no chance with the Doberman, with the Rottweiler - run at the dog and then veer off. After playing with the Rottie - it always overshot me and had to put on the breaks. This gives you the time you need to get away. If you time it wrong ... the Rottie has a bite force like I had never seen. A ball in her mouth was NOT coming out unless she let you. Her head was massive as was her neck. Unlike the Doberman, this dog understood family and friends. Once you came to our house a couple of times the Rottie allowed you into and out of the house with no problems.

Neither one of these dogs has a problem with children. Both were great dogs. I would recommend either for a family.

I like to wander alone in the woods and I've owned both breeds. One thing is for sure: Both know when to be in protection mode and I was always fully relaxed in the woods knowing I have a skilled bodyguard by my side

I opted for a Doberman when looking for a family and guarding dog, 2 things missed on here though:

Doberman has RIDICULOUS endurance, speed is one thing but my dog is literally an infinite Duracell battery!! The athleticism is through the roof

Also the Doberman is very smart, sometimes too smart - a very knowledgeable breeder once told me if you teach a german shepherd a walking route the dog will be clever enough to remember it, if you teach a Doberman he will remember it, then work out shortcuts 😂

Literally so true the dog does indeed THINK prior to tasking, really highly intelligent dogs

I have owned both and love both. My Dobermans seemed to be more territorial when it came to protection and my Rottweilers seemed to be based more off my families emotions. The best kids dog I ever had was a 129lb rescued male Rottweiler. He was nothing but patient with my toddler son no matter what but if my son whimpered, squealed or cried he was on a mission to find out and take care of the reason why.

As a senior, widowed female, I prefer to keep large breeds. Currently, I have a GSD. I often see another senior female walking with her Doberman. She's a tiny & frail woman, smaller than the dog. That dog is huge & I sure as heck wouldn't mess with the woman, let alone approach her. The dog doesn't zigzag walk like so many other dogs. It stays directly beside her, keeping her slow pace. I'm impressed.

As a rottie owner, my girl has a strong natural protection instinct. She definitely has no fear of anything. Super sweet and goofy, I wouldn't trade her for anything.

I've owned a Doberman and I've owned two Rottweilers. Both make great guard dogs and amazing family pets. However you if want a great guard dog you will have to train them well. It really depends on the individual dog in my opinion. On her own the Doberman was just a golden retriever which looked like a Hell hound. A very strong and agile hell hound mind you. She did a great job looking the part but if it's performance you want you will need to train them from a young age. For my two Rottweilers my good girl Sheena was a dream dog. The most affectionate dog I've ever met, a great guard dog and beloved family pet. She had that natural hunting instinct and was loyal till her last day. I was blessed to have her in my life . The male...well only thing he was a threat to was his food bowl. Pretty sure he wasn't even a well bred Rottweiler.
I will always favor the Rottweiler over the Doberman but both are great dogs in the hands of a capable owner.

I had a Rottweiler and a Chihuahua. The Rottweiler passed a few months ago, she was 13 and I had her since she was 8 weeks old. My chihuahua is close to 15 years old so they basically grew up together. The Rott was scared of the Chihuahua. They would play together but if the Chi went off the Rott would run from him. lol

I had the extreme honor of owning a beautiful European Doberman. He just passed away at the age of 2yrs 2 months from DCM. I am beyond devastated, my life will not be the same without him. He was the most amazing dog ever. He was smart, very protective, but he also had an aura about him. You either loved him or were scared to death of him. Most were scared but he was a goofy, playful, loving soul. He weighed 130 lbs, he was so big...RIP KHAOS, you were loved and never will be forgotten. 4/5/2020-6/9/2022💕🐾🐾💕

I think the Rottwieler looks more intimidating just bc it’s size is massive I used to be scared of them but now I own one and he’s the best dog I’ve ever owned he’s a big cuddly baby 😂

When I was growing up one of my friends had a Rottweiler. She was great. She stayed with us off lead, would run, swim and play with us for hours. I've always respected the breed for those traits.
