The explanation that drove it home for me was this:

"Pick the string and drive your thumb through the string by rotating your picking hand 90 degrees". If done correctly you'll get a perfect harmonic every time if played in the correct position. For my guitar, the easiest position is just behind the neck pickup (I believe this is a 5th interval). Yes, high gain is also important.
