In this Science segment, we take a closer look at the "bunker plan" launched by Germany as a response to a worsening international threat, particularly from Russia. The goal is to identify all shelters or bunkers capable of accommodating the population in case of an attack on German soil. FRANCE 24's Julia Sieger tells us more.

Here in Riga, Latvia, the government has a similar scheme for 400 bomb shelters. My own apartment block, for example, has a pretty deep basement but it needs strengthening and with a secure exit. It's an estimated Eur50k part paid by apartment owners, by the block owner and by authorities. As I have plans to move well south next year, I doubt I'll see it being done but I wish Latvia all luck in the coming years and hope they never have to be used.
