Huichol Shamanic Culture with Gail Hayssen

This the third in a series of interviews with Gail about the cultural practices of the Huichol Indians of Mexico. Here she describes how her journeys to the Huichol people in Mexico intersected with her marriage, and how she eventually brought her husband with her to the peyote ritual ceremony. She movingly describes the close, family relationships she developed with individual Huichols. She also discusses an instance in which a Huichol guest at her home in California received a healing treatment from a Mongolian shaman.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is also the Grand Prize winner of the 2021 Bigelow Institute essay competition regarding the best evidence for survival of human consciousness after permanent bodily death.

Gail is delightful. She is like the sunshine. No doubt she blesses everyone who knows her and she definitely is a Huichol family member and spirit. Thank you for this wonderful interview Jeffrey.

What a great lady. I love that she is so positive. I think her uniting shamanic cultures is an example of the connection humans have with the world and each other. The respect, acceptance, charity, enthusiasm, community, etc. are something all cultures should embrace more readily.

The lesson I take from this is that you truly never know where the blessings you put out will have an effect and that the effect will ripple for even two generations. Her fathers teachings, her becoming a Shaman, the people she met, the pictures she took... their are threads here that are made from love that transcended language and culture and the kindness given has created ripples that are still being felts so many years later.

awww Gail, you made me cry too. How moving. But the part about going off at sunset and then suddenly being in pitch black made me laugh out loud. I went to the rainforest in Northern Australia a few years back and the night times are dark - it's like a fabric! Anyone who hasn't seen the Small Medium at Large podcast - give it a whirl. It's a blast.

Thank you Gail and Jeffrey for another beautiful conversation. It made me laugh and cry. This is a delightful and profound podcast, as is Gail's, and I'm so grateful to and feel love for both of you.

If you take away the shamanic experience from this story, we have our shared human experience that is playing out all over the planet. This deserves some reverence.
