Great story Bruce. I'll always remember that day, first chasing FiFi down the runway at IWA and then off to film Llama drama in Sun City.

An unbelievable beast. Flown by guys who were young enough to be my grand sons. I saw the Enola Gay at the Dulles Aerospace Museum in 2019. Thank you, Bruce.

Awesome story. I did get to see her in Olympia, WA back in 2014 though was not flying due to damage to landing gear on arrival.

If KeeBird & Fertile Myrtle didn't suffer their fate there would be 4 of these B-29's in flying condition.

On Tinian, the hardened B-29 crews had little patience with Tibbets or his crews due to their antics that came with them from the US and pelted the huts they were in because of their hijinks. Indeed in the book Enola Gay their Top Secret status let them indulge themselves with things like flying to pick up specially made coffee cups and when they ruffled the feathers both locals as well as some in the military it was glossed over. Whether it was stocking its mess with best of everything that civilians and other military ranks could only imagine about the only thing that got them in real trouble was talking about its training. Even the B-29 that would go down in history belonged to another pilot almost up to the day of the mission as Tibbets had taken it over as he own and only found it out when he saw Enola Gay had been painted ofhis former aircraft. The B-29 had many teething problems when it entered service and it wasn't unusual for some to come in with engine fires back to back as its propellers would only windmill while shutdown insted of featherd until it failed. The mythos surrounding the bomber isn't entirely hubris as it leveled Japanese cities with conventional ordinance before Hiroshima but over Korea it was a sitting duck to Migs and was withdrawn almost entirely due to its losses.

I was there when DOC took back to the skies I might of shed a tear or 2 just seeing him fly again. I know A lot of facts about the restore of him too.

It’s weird there use to be thousands of b-29 and now there are only two left, maybe if it’s possible we could get a third one flying again
