Fujifilm XT2 vs XT3 - Face/eye auto focus test

In todays video, I test face detection on the Fujifilm XT2 vs XT3. I use the 56mm f1.2 and the 50mm - 140mm f2.8.
I wasn't to sure about the XT3 at first but like most things fujifilm there improvements are massive. Where is the XT3 going to be in 1 years time after many updates. It truly is an amazing affordable camera. Next week I will be doing another video using the 100mm - 400mm on the XT3. A few images from todays video can be found on my instagram page.

*Please not, Images in this video are compressed and resized J-Pegs, having shot over 800 images on both cameras throughtout the day the video would not hold full size*

What a shame to put in such great video capabilities, then handicap it by not adding IBIS and a flippy screen for vloggers/hybrid shooters. If they added those two things to this camera they would own the vlogger/hybrid/videographer market.

Was interested in the test that starts at about 14:00. Why do we see every frame of the XT2 struggling but not all the XT3 shots? Not many are shown at 14:37? Thanks.

Hi Lewis, nice to see you both in action!, good work, the conclusion you come to seems very much in line with others, Ken says it is the best camera he's ever used, for me the problem is that I've had my XT2 for a couple of years but still am far from reaching the limits of it's potential!, while the XT3 is obviously much faster and more reliable I cannot claim that the XT2 fails me, I let it down!, I keep taking shots that don't come out quite right because I have failed to make the most appropriate adjustments!, my keeper rate is still less that 15%!. Maybe in another two years/5, 000 shots i'll go for the new one, of course by that time an even better one will appear!. I do find it interesting that someone like you, prepared to go to great lengths to get the best out of your gear, have fallen in with the Fujifilm system, I bought an XT1 back when no-one knew just how good it was, and there were hardly any of these brilliant lenses, my current fave. is the 80mm macro, I've been getting close-ups of little butterflies where you can see that they have hairy eyeballs!, in the past I had always wondered why I could not get a sharp focus on their eyes!. Back in June this year my XT2 packed up one morning when I was shooting butterflies near Newmarket, this time I telephoned the Fujifilm UK HQ in Bedford, the receptionist picked up within two rings!, and when she put me through to Colin in Servicing he picked up within three rings! I could hardly believe it!. To cut the long wonderful story short I got the XT2 and the XT1 fully restored and returned within four working days, both with unconditional 12 month warranty and both within the quoted standing charge, £240.00 for the XT2 and £140.00 for the XT1, that had been dropped onto it's screen carrying the 100-400 lens from about 1 metre onto a granite kerb, although when I picked it up the shattered LCD still worked!, in fact everything except the E VF worked, but by the time I took it in it's eyepiece was missing as was half of it's 'skin' the socket door was buckled, the computer sync cover had gone- all fixed all for the price!, what a firm! I guess that's the Japanese for you!, will they take over the world!. Cheers, Richard

Thanks for the video....the grip is one of my reasons I was holding out on getting the XT3 over the XT2 because I own the XH1 and love that setup much more than the XT series of cameras. If the grip is beefier and the low light performance is as good as you say I may just get it around xmas time with grip. I was planning for the XH2 but will wait till after Xmas to see if Fuji will come out the camera for 2019. I plan to use the camera for low light concert photography and I too was thinking of the D500 but after the Angry Photographer's review and yours, I think Im staying with my Fuji's since I already have the fast glass.

dear Lewis, very interesting video, but please tell me, was the power-boost turned on on the XT2 when you carried out the test? Thanks ciao

56 f1.2 is probably THE worst lens to use for auto focus testing, so all the more impressive how well it performs on the x-t3.

Do you use back button focus? Do you press and hold down on the shutter the whole time? Thanks

I couldn't find your video testing the 100-400 with these two cameras.

Thanks to you both Lewis, great video showing the real world comparison and how the camera has progressed. I still have my XT1 which has made me love photography again since having my old manual film cameras. I think I will be getting the XT3 especially as the is now no requirement for the grip as with the XT2. Also have you tried the 16mm Fuji 1.4? An amazing lens

Does anyone know if it's possible to set the display so that all the information sits outside of the viewable area, so it sits in a black border of sorts? One of my biggest gripes with digital cameras from ALL manufacturers is how the composition is always flooded with the info. I'd rather scale the image down a fraction to separate the two... rather than turn info on and off..

Thanks a lot for this video. I was waiting for some kind of the same comparing the autofocus of these cameras. Could you share the images taken on 56/1.2 on both cameras, probably in low resolution, just to check the autofocus working result?

Great comparison! I have the 56mm APD version. I wonder if the AF performance (especially face/eye) for the APD version has dramatically improved as well. This would give me a huge reason to upgrade if it does.
