Volkswagen has a bunch of electric cars coming to Australia and the ID.5 is one of them. We had the chance to test drive it in Germany before the ID.5 and ID.4 arrive in Australia mid-2024.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the effort Paul is going to review these vehicles overseas from Australia. I'm looking forward to seeing many more great reviews.

The backdrop at the start of the video with the sun on the lake is gorgeous. The car looks so-so.

These drum brakes can no longer be compared with the old ones from before. In today's concept of electric vehicles, this is more than sufficient, even with a very sporty driving style. Finally, recuperation takes over the majority of the negative acceleration without putting any strain on the brakes. And with this front brake, any criticism is inappropriate anyway.

I have a ID.4 Pro S that has 143, 500 miles on it, it’s been a great car with zero maintenance cost except a lot of sets of tires 6 sets on rear Drive Wheels & 4 sets on front. Mine is rear drive only single rear engine, love the car ! VW makes a great product with the ID’s, definitely would like to see the Higher performance model with somewhere around 400 HP think they would sell well with about 350 miles of range would also be great !

I love the buttons on the steering wheel makes things easier than fiddling with the screen while driving

Overall good looking vehicle. The front of the vehicle could have taken a more aggressive look for a GTX trim. The rear brakes should definitely be disc brakes.

The VW has a built-in sunshade. The Model Y is like an after market shade that needs to be installed manually. Completely different.

Wow I'm definitely voting for more reviews filmed at the golden hour. Even a blob as boring looking as the iD5 looked stunning with that light and that deep red paint. Brilliant work as always from Paul, but my god what a soul crushingly boring looking car from the folks who make GTi's.

I would take the ID5 instead of a Tesla Y, I purchased a Cupra Born instead of Tesla 3 and I am very happy with that. You can bet that the augmented realty won’t be on the ID5 just like it didn’t come on my fully specified Born. The reason for this is that it requires the northern hemisphere satellite system that cannot be accessed in Australia. I would have loved this on my Born but because we are in Australia it’s not an option. I will consider one of these if it comes fully equiped but I’m not holding my breath. Regarding the drum brakes they work really well on my born as they have put larger disks up front with the sports pack. You don’t see rear disks on a truck and when you consider you’re got 2 tons of car, it makes sense.

WTF is up with drum brakes on a new car??? Thought those died in the 90's?

Drum brakes on a EV? Sure you might not need to brake alot in an EV but when you definitely need to stop a 2.7t vehicle you want to stop.

VW just changed the whole software and main screen of the ID4. The shifter was moved to a stock. And they changed the motor to give it a lot more HP and a huge bump in torque. This vehicle is DOA.

Not sure it has any chance of performing as well as my 2014 103TDI Tiguan on the beach, in t he sand dunes or on my prospecting trips in the bush. Ability to be raised and fitted with 70 aspect ratio tyres for the Bush driving will be very important to me.

Great work Paul.
This car imo (and major markets like Europe/US/China) isn't competitive against MY.
I honest think they need to significantly undercut the $65k MY base price if they are to be in the conversation. But considering that the Born starts at over $60k once you include optional (but essential) interior package just to get heated and powered s eats (amongst a few other additions) I doubt they can achieve this price offset necessary to compete.

Ok for Europe. But totally impractical for Australia, no spare, lack of charging facilities and range hopeless unless you don't leave town.

Every reporter keeps on rambling about those buttons on the steering wheel. Living with an ID.3 for 2 years now I never had a problem with those buttons. They are OK in my book.

So 7 seconds to 100 is fast and Tesla standard range Y’s 6.9 seconds is slow? How does that work out?

Very, very smart move from Volkswagen with providing 2 options - one with sloping roof and another without it. Sloping roofs absolutely DESTROY practicality of an SUV. Severely reduced storage space at the back. ZERO visibility through rear glass. No rear wipers. And the advantage of a sloping roof in aero dynamics is negligible.
