How to Calculate Ratios in Excel (GCD Function explained)

Показать описание

Learn to easily calculate the ratio of two numbers in Excel with Excel formulas. A ratio tells you how much of one thing there is, compared to another thing. It's a common way to compare amounts.

Here's a sneak peek of what's inside:

- Understanding Ratios: Learn what ratios are and how they're commonly represented in Excel.
Simple Calculation Methods: Find out how to calculate ratios using basic Excel functions, including the GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) function.
- Dynamic Ratio Calculation: See how to calculate ratios dynamically from a dataset using the COUNTIF function in Excel.
- Advanced Techniques with LET Function: For Office 365 users, explore the use of the LET function for more efficient and readable formulas.
- Practical Examples: Understand how to apply these techniques in real-world scenarios, such as calculating the ratio of Managers to Team Members or total project team members.
- Dynamic Excel Tables: Learn how to make your ratios automatically update with changes in your data using Excel tables.

For example to calculate the ratio of girls to boys or managers to team members.
There isn't a single formula that does the ratio calculation in Excel. Instead you need to divide each value with its greatest common denominator.
We'll use the GCD Function in Excel to calculate the highest common factor. I'll also show you how you can use the COUNTIF Function in Excel to extract ratios from a dataset.
As a bonus you'll learn how you can use the Excel LET Function to combine everything in one, single Excel formula.

I'll be honest, I opened this thinking "how on earth is this complex enough to justify a YouTube video", and I came away with my mind blown. Some lovely little details within this to help keep your Excel spreadsheets understandable. Super job.

Its always great the way you give examples not only to those with Office 365 but to everyone else with other versions.

" ... let me know if this is something you might need in your report, or something you are already using ..."

Until a few minutes ago, I was not familiar with this calculation (I even had to look up 'GCD'). Like most people, I am very familiar with ratio's ... but had not thought much about how to calculate them in Excel. You have once again planted a 'seed' ... so thank you for that.

I don’t know if I’ll need to use this but it’s always good to have these up your sleeve if asked, Leila, you make me look like an excel genius to my colleagues and more importantly, to my boss

Excellent as ever, Leila!! I admit to having done this the hard way, but can see a great benefit for those who use tables of names or items more than numbers. Thank you!

Used GCD earlier though but never thought of combining GCD with LET function. You never ceases to amaze.🙌

I don't often need to use ratios however it is always good to know how to dynamically calculate them . GCD could be used for many other calculations.... Thanks for the bonus let tips. Also very useful...

Cool Tip Leila, thank you! Especially liked the COUNTIF with table idea and of course the LET function version! For me, LET = "L"eila's "E"xcel "T"utorials, where everything goes "right" and nothing is "left" out! 😁😊👍

Thanks a lot, as always very understandable, I did not know the GCD, but have been using a long workaround. Definitely going to change that.
