On August 31, 1980, Poland’s Solidarity labor movement was born with an agreement signed in Gdansk that ended a 17-day-old strike.

Gdansk polish strikers and gvernment reached an agreement giving the country's workers the right to form independent self-ruling trade unions and the right to strike. New talks have begun to negotiate workers' remaining demands.
