The first one really bothered me.
The fact that the alcoholic grandmother was still allowed around the children is so upsetting. The mom is just as toxic as her alcoholic mother, enabling her mother and manipulating the husband. The husband's mother is also not totally a saint since she took the children without asking, as if that was ok. I don't know, leaves a bad taste in your mouth in the end.
